1. Hands
They reach out to the world
They carry our fortune
Written firmly into their palm
They may tremble and shiver
When we need it the least
But as well they may be all safe and calm
They give and take
They tease and taunt
They salute or wave goodbye
They caress a lover
Pull the trigger of a gun
Sign a treaty that seals the peace
They build cars and houses
And at times they save a life
Or go spreading the disease
They give and take
They tease and taunt
They salute or wave goodbye
They push and shove
They clutch and cling
Or hold somebody tight
It's all in those hands
They can do so much good
Can be so destructive
Hands shape the world
Hands break it down
They may clench into fists
Or as well be opened wide
Invite you or push you back
They may pin the words down
Of the book that will change your life
Or close around a victim's neck
They give and take
They tease and taunt
They salute or wave goodbye
They push and shove
They clutch and cling
Or hold somebody tight
It's all in those hands
They can do so much good
Can be so destructive
Hands shape the world
Hands break it down
Hands build it up again
2. Brief Encounter
Alone in his empty room
He read that book page by page
In search of truth
Of comfort or some hope
He read 'If you knock, my door will open'
But those he tried were all locked tight
Like flickering lights
Bits of memories crossed his mind
Countless shattered pieces
That refused to fall in place
He read 'I'll search for all the lost ones'
But how much more lost could he be
He shook his fist at heaven
Stood up for all the broken souls
I will not forget the words
He spoke to me that day
He said 'Man, if you believe, would you ask one question
In my name because to me God never speaks:
Does he still rest on Sundays, and look at his creation,
And think it was good?
He could barely breathe
Hardly grab just one clear thought
The walls were closing in on him
His time was running out
He read 'If you ask, you will be given'
And he thought of everything he had lost
He shook his fist at heaven
Stood up for all the broken souls
I will not forget the words
He spoke to me that day
He said 'Man, if you believe, would you ask one question
In my name because to me God never speaks:
Does he still rest on Sundays, and look at his creation,
And think it was good?
Does he think it was good?
It was a brief encounter
But after all these years it's still on my mind
Nobody mourned for him
There were no flowers on his grave
I hope at last you got your answer
And if so, would you let me know?
3. From Where I Stand
You've been my last outpost
Before the wild open sea
Suddenly promising rescue when I
Was just about to give in
But could it be, could it be
I just fooled myself
I've been your last wall of defence
Against the truth flooding in
You were dying of thirst and so gladly you drank
When I offered you poison for wine
But could it be, could it be
You just fooled yourself
From where I stand
It all seems pretty clear
From where I stand
There is not much left but fear
Not much left but fear...
Of being alone once again
So we close our eyes and count slowly to ten
Giving truth time enough to get out of our sight
When we seek we make sure we don't find
If ignorance was really bliss
Then the world's seen no happier couple than this
You and I struggling to not get too close
While our hearts are so firmly entwined
We're a match made in heaven
For a life down in hell
A broken promise to ease each other's pain
A cure failing to deliver relief
So could it be, could it be
We just fooled ourselves
From where I stand
It all seems pretty clear
From where I stand
There is not much left but fear
Not much left but fear...
Of being alone once again
So we close our eyes and count slowly to ten
Giving truth time enough to get out of our sight
When we seek we make sure we don't find
If ignorance was really bliss
Then the world's seen no happier couple than this
You and I struggling to not get too close
While our hearts are so firmly entwined
So we are watching our world slowly turn into grey
While fear drives its claws
Deeper into our flesh with every new day
From where I stand
It all seems pretty clear
From where I stand
There is not much left but fear
Not much left but fear...
Of being alone once again
So we close our eyes and count slowly to ten
Giving truth time enough to get out of our sight
And when we seek we make sure we don't find
If ignorance was really bliss
Then the world's seen no happier couple than this
You and I struggling to not get too close
While our hearts are so firmly entwined
So we are watching our world slowly turn into grey
4. Test Of Time
I was born
As just another small town boy in '69
I had only little worries on my mind
The world seemed kind when I was young
An endless gentle flow of days
Not a lot in life seemed really serious
As time moved on
There were lots of things I had to learn
Such as, if you want to take you've got to
Give a little in return
And though life seemed gentle still
Somehow it got slightly more serious
A winner, in our times, is someone
Who sells his soul at the highest price
To be a slave to profession
Slave to the grind
To whatever other master
The test of time shows what we're made of
The test of time will reveal the truth
The test of time will see us stay afloat or drown, win or lose
All at once
We look back on the best days of our lives
Find out none of our teenage dreams hold water
By the age of thirty-five
Time's not in endless supply
And that's why all in life is serious
A winner, in our times, is someone
Who sells his soul at the highest price
To be a slave to profession
Slave to the grind
To whatever other master
The test of time shows what we're made of
The test of time will reveal the truth
The test of time will see us stay afloat or drown, win or lose
The test of time tells how much we can carry
The test of time will see us flex or break
The test of time will show no mercy, time never waits
5. North
Late at night we grab our things
Take the car and hit the road
Follow the old familiar trace
Laid in our secret code
The same old village by the sea
Once a second home for you and me
As we drive all through the night
We both don't dare to speak
So afraid we won't succeed
In finding what we seek
The same old village by the sea
Home of all our memories
That will hurt, rather than do us good
Life taught us many lessons
I thought we learned those lessons well
We should be old enough to face it
But we both don't say a word
Just speechlessly drive South
While emotionally, it feels
We're heading North
There are things that fall to dust
As soon as touched for real
(They're) meant to be kept safe deep inside
And not to be revealed
The same old village by the sea
Covered by the dust of centuries
That wiped out all the traces we had left
Life taught us many lessons
I thought we learned those lessons well
We should be old enough to face it
But we both don't say a word
Just speechlessly drive South
While emotionally, it feels
We're heading North
6. South Of London
Yet another election
In late 2004
(One) stupid little man
Four years more
I saw you on TV
Heard your rhetoric of power
Spoken in the tongue of fear
Star spangled banner
Stained with blood
Coercing allies
In the name of God
You will learn I am the Hydra
Cut my head off and two new ones will
Spring right from the wound
You've been a caring father
I'm the monster you created
In the end I'll be your doom
I'm somewhere south of London
Somewhere north of Rome
Somewhere west of Baghdad
East of LA or near your home
I am waiting for you
Until the day I die
I'm playing tricks on you
So come and catch me, if you dare
To try
I know your secrets
I sense your fear
The scent of your blood
Has led me here
I am feasting in your garden
I am eating at your table
And I am sleeping in your bed
I am the yield of your investment
The assets you have gathered
I'm the big catch in your net
I'm somewhere south of London
Somewhere north of Rome
Somewhere west of Baghdad
East of LA or near your home
I am waiting for you
Until the day I die
I'm playing tricks on you
So come and catch me, if you dare to try
7. Wasn't It Good
Focused on the things we're missing
Ignoring everything we've got
A thousand doors that stand wide open
Won't make up for just one that's shut
Seeking nearness from the distance
But scared whenever it comes close
Frozen hearts exposed too briefly
To the sun to melt the floes
All my secrets, dreams and wishes
Freely laid into your hands
My faith and my self-esteem
Rise and fall at your command
All my nerves and all my senses
In constant state of red alert
A mind in pointless, restless motion
A body hopelessly inert
Hiding behind walls of silence
When there would have been so much to say
Whoever said 'Silence is golden'
For sure he'd never come our way
Nostalgia is a dangerous poison
If mixed with bitterness and grief
Makes the past look so much brighter
Forms illusions of relief
Makes what's lost still seem an option
Though it failed the test of time
Pretends the years have done no damage
That we're still in our prime
Wasn't it good, good just the way it was
Wasn't it good, before we first tasted loss
When it felt real, and not too good to be true
When we were young and free, and unafraid
And when time was on our side
Wasn't it good, as long as we still had hope
And firmly believed, that we had the strength to cope
With whatever would come and stand in our way
When we thought the life ahead of us
Would unfold to our demands
Wasn't It Good
In life we get a thousand chances
But less they get with every year
We hoped that time would be on our side
But it moved on and left us here
Wasn't it good, good just the way it was
Wasn't it good, before we first tasted loss
When it felt real, and not too good to be true
When we were young and free, and unafraid
And when time was on our side
Wasn't it good, as long as we still had hope
And firmly believed, that we had the strength to cope
With whatever would come and stand in our way
When we thought the life ahead of us
Would unfold to our demands
Wasn't It Good
Wasn't It Good
Wasn't It Good
Wasn't It Good
8. Islanders
So tired of living in this exile I once chose
Sheltered by a levy I have built with my own hands
So tired of waiting for the flood to take me in
Or a ship to pick me up and carry me to solid land
From all I know and all I've seen
There's not a lot left in between
It's a choice to either do or die
A choice you've got to make
Catch that ship right on time
Wherever it may sail
Catch that ship right on time
Your choice will tip the scale
Catch that ship right on time
Don't be left behind
So tired of walking in someone else's shoes
Of being hooked on dreams so vague, that were not meant for me
So tired of paying someone else's dues
Of seeking the warmth of a sun that I will never see
From all I know and all I've seen
There's not a lot left in between
It's a choice to either do or die
A choice you've got to make
Catch that ship right on time
Wherever it may sail
Catch that ship right on time
Your choice will tip the scale
Catch that ship right on time
Don't be left behind
We're islanders, both you and me
Trapped on an island on our own
To share a form of loneliness
That company won't ease
The sea around that has no end
Taught us there's no solid land
For islanders like you
For islanders like me
From all I know and all I've seen
There's not a lot left in between
It's a choice to either do or die
A choice you've got to make
Catch that ship right on time
Wherever it may sail
Catch that ship right on time
Your choice will tip the scale
Catch that ship right on time
Don't be left behind
9. Running
Days feel like minutes
A lifetime is rushing by
You are moving in circles
It seems you're going nowhere
Keep moving, keep moving
At night you can't find sleep
And your headaches don't go away
Always giving your best
Knowing it won't be near enough
Keep moving, keep moving
Always keep moving
Or be removed
So what is that mission we're on
And when did I sign in
Is there anything in it for me at all
Still lies the ocean wide
And I hear it's calling me
To a place beyond wrong and right
Where the sky meets the sea
There's a deadline approaching
Your tax statement's overdue
An invoice unsettled
And too many bills to be paid
Keep pushing, keep pushing
There's a loan from the bank
A sales-target out of reach
A project waiting in the pipeline
And another one unfinished still
Keep pushing, keep pushing
Always keep pushing
Or be pushed around
So what is that mission we're on
And when did I sign in
Is there anything in it for me at all
Still lies the ocean wide
And I hear it's calling me
To a place beyond wrong and right
Where the sky meets the sea
Still lies the ocean deep
Such grace never met the eye
A whole world in peaceful sleep
Under a star covered sky
It's a rat race we're in
And this game that we play
Has no winner, just losers
Or total refusers that just break away
All your friends feel neglected
And your wife says that you don't care
And they all have a point
But there is a job to be done
So keep running, keep running
Always keep running
Until your time has run out
So what is that mission we're on
And when did I sign in
Is there anything in it for me at all
Still lies the ocean wide
And I hear it's calling me
To a place beyond wrong and right
Where the sky meets the sea
Still lies the ocean deep
Such grace never met the eye
A whole world in peaceful sleep
Under a star covered sky
