1. Wounded Illusion
Do you hear that irksome din that awkward, rasping craw,
A raven, gripped to life's last limbs or am I grasping straws?!
Listen! there, that painful squall that parched and broken cry,
A croak, as of some wretched soul awoken to the sky.
You hear it not? How could you not? its calls are stinging sharp,
the blasphemy of aural grot appals the ringing dark.
And now I cannot hear for noise I cannot think for pain,
The piercing screech negates my poise and rattles through my brain
Yet think, and quickly think I must as terror works its will
And weaves through halls of dank and dust with swift unearthly skill.
My senses reel as though attacked they leave me sick and sore,
a fearfulness you clearly lack unstricken by the caw.
A flash of rage, I will fetch a blade and plunge it to the hilt,
the door soon swings, my fever sings there is nothing here but guilt.
I cannot flee, I cannot fight the coarsest feathers fold,
Their oily blackness blocks my sight as wings grow stiff and cold.
My screams tear wounds in your illusions.
2. Dash To Destruction
A Ghostly braying haunts my dreams in nightmares neighing from the dark.
A prisoner woken into screams on death’s cold journey I've embarked
The sky was dim and grey and dull an icy mist around me lulled.
My captors dragged me down the track and strapped me to a horse’s back.
Lashed tightly to that angry steed whose rage was like an open war,
Unwilling to repent my deed my curse upon them evermore was lost beneath their laughter’s roar.
I swore that they would rue the day when I became a cuckold’s prey
The courser’s wild career was freed we hurtled forth with reckless speed
wrecked haplessly through blackness, sent to faster reach destruction’s end.
We charged for many days and nights away! We charged toward the light
Of blood-red dawn, where heavens bled and birds of prey upon me fed.
Struggling hard against my bonds the beast of burden hurtled on.
My reeling brain was ringing sore my tethered limbs were wet with gore
And as I braced the noonday sky with sun-baked lips burned black and dry,
A rasping throat that couldn't cry and one last wish: my dying sigh
The splendour of his mighty mane was marred by sweat and blood and pain.
His homeland’s fields were reached with pride He snorted, reeled, he fell and died.
3. Fire Under Flesh
Envy‘s, seething dreams enmesh an endless fever in my flesh
Searing spirit, mind and heart cauterising rational thought
Magma surging through these veins untameable
Thirsting flame, fed by quenchless fire this zealous heart, is bursting with desire.
A fire-storm of fear has frozen me my passion’s pyre, is burning inwardly
For many years, I have clung to jealousy an emerald-eyed monstrosity
My emerald-eyed monstrosity
Envy, my sweet mistress speaks in whispers hot as Etna’s peak
Rising with the lava-flow from lakes of fire far below
Beneath the molten-undertow my pulse grows weak.
The full inferno of this ire a cold and unconsuming fire
Swept higher into hate-scorched skies that fall before these jaded eyes
A place where lost desires are left to seethe beneath, like fire under flesh.
Like fire under flesh
4. Veronica
Many thousand good-nights my dearly beloved for never will I see you more.
This thought is greater torture than any soul hath bore by God's sweet grace, or ancient lore
Innocent I've arrived innocent must die none have yet survived the death-inducing lie
The Priest is barred from my dark cell even though I knew him well
Before I was forced to confess to witchery under duress.
My pleading, bone-whipped cries have chilled the grievous guards enough
To aid these shattered hands to scribe and tell you of my love.
Promises of death's release seep like sweet, seductive speech weary with the agony.
Six names said; stripped and bled mourning half a dozen dead.
They’ll immolate a traitor forced to sin and throw the wretched ashes to the wind.
My part on this world's stage is done I played it well for one so young
Dwell not on my sufferings I bore them for you.
Forced to confess avowing to witchery under duress.
Avowing to treachery Veronica, my sweet Veronica
5. The Unmaking
Smash our shrines and claim our gods cull our customs, change our words
Hack our culture, crush and quell hew the stone and block the well.
Starve the mind and spirit first break the heart then slake the thirst
Hope and pride shall pay the cost Wolf-heads in the wasteland, lost.
Taste the poison, bliss is all you’ll find silent suicide.
Feed our fathers to the lustrate blaze unmake this land’s ancient ways.
Glut the ground with gouts of blood crimson fields where brave men stood.
Dowse the heart that burns with pride force all outward love inside
Cut the throat that sings her name silence talk of England’s fame.
Twisting vipers coiled like vines venom’s tincture turned to wine.
Smouldered scriptures, shattered shrines swallowed by the sands of time
Only at the end of days unmake this land’s ancient ways.
